What's all the chatter about?

There are a few basic budgie sounds that I'll share for you. Each is in mp3 format.

1. The pleasant chirping.
This is one of my favorite things to hear every day. Pleasant, soft, happy chirping. The only thing better are the singy warbly trilly songs that my budgies sometimes sing. (I'll work on getting a sound file of that soon.) This is the sound of content and happy budgies.

2. The monotonous chirp.
This is a bit different and it does get old after a few minutes. Budgies (especially females) often repeat this sound over and over or, as you can hear in this file, chirp back and forth to each other. This is Pixel and Phizzy pretty much saying "Where are you?" "Over here!" over and over and over. If you have more than one budgie, you'll hear this quite often. If they don't get an answer they tend to stop after several chirps. Otherwise, it can go on for quite a while.

3. The angry dolphin.
This is what I like to call the "angry dolphin" or "angry Flipper" noise. It means you've got a budgie who is extremely annoyed by something. Budgies often do this at each other when they're bickering or at you when you try to remove them from the cage or put them back in the cage when they're not ready.

4. Angry dolphin #2
A longer, more passionate version of the angry dolphin noise.

5. ACKACKACKACKACK!!!
I'll bet that most people didn't count on having to hear this noise when they bought their budgies! I often see message board posts saying "WHAT'S WRONG WITH MY BUDGIE?? HE KEEPS SQUAWKING!!" The answer is, nothing is wrong with your budgie. Budgies, like most parrots, love the sound of their own voices. Sometimes they make this noise when they're excited, sometimes they do it when they're startled. Basically, this is a very common and very normal sound and should not be treated as a behavioral problem. Unless you look over and see that something is clearly upsetting your budgie, he's probably fine and just wants to make his lovely noise.

6. Talking
This is Teapot saying:"Hello baby! Teeeeeapot, sweet little budgie" (Teapot belongs to "chirpy," from the BBC forums. She is an avid bird lover and rescuer in the UK.)

7. Sweet Sounds
This is what I wish I could hear from my budgies almost all the time. :) They often make these sweet little noises in the middle of feeding each other. Paris will make them to me if I talk back to him while he sits on my finger. They're adorable! This file features Paris.

8. More Sweet Sounds
This is Piper and Paris having a conversation.
