What's New?

I am sorry to say that I won't be around for a while. Due to a very unexpected life change (impending divorce) I have lost all of my flock. Fortunately, they are in the hands of amazing people who went a long way (literally) to help me out. But they could definitely use some help as well, having so many new additions to foster (seven budgies, a cockatiel, two conures, and an eclectus). If you are able to donate anything (money, food, supplies, etc.) PLEASE contact me at terri at budgietalk dot com and I will let you know how to help. I apologize for asking this, but the situation is dire and I'm not even sure where I'll be living soon myself. It's a heartbreaking situation and even some kind words or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all so much for the kind words you've left me, the emails, and for visiting this site. I will keep up with it as best I can and continue helping via email as best I can. I hope that I've helped many of you and that you and your flocks are doing well. -Terri

Budgies (commonly known as parakeets in America) are the world's most popular pet bird. Most people are attracted to their bright colors, small size, and equally small price tag. Because of the budgie's enormous popularity as a "cheap, easy, pet" it is also one of the most misunderstood, abused, underestimated pets out there and the purpose of this website to is educate past, present, and future owners about the proper care for these birds. I also hope that through my website, you gain a new appreciation of these small parrots. Many people don't realize just how wonderful budgies can be as a pet! So many of these birds spend their lives never coming out of a cage and never being taught that human companionship is a great thing. The fact is, budgies are easy to tame and make wonderful companions when you care for them properly. They are very intelligent, playful, interactive pets. I have four and not a day goes by that they don't bring a smile to my face.

As a child, I used to think that anyone who had a tame "parakeet" was lucky. I tried taming them once or twice when I was young and had no luck. Then again, I also had no idea what I was doing! I had no idea that my bird cage was too tiny, that they didn't have enough toys, that the corn cob bedding was unhealthy or that their all seed diet was seriously lacking in nutrition. I had never even heard of an avian veterinarian. Sadly, this went on for quite some time and it's only been since I brought Piper home that I learned what a budgie really is, what it can be, and what I should be doing for these incredible birds. Every single day I wake up to budgies, I read about budgies, I talk about budgies, I play with budgies. Every day I also hear about people who are just the way I used to be. They don't mean to be cruel to their bird, they just don't know any better. Worse, are the people who myself and others try to help only to have them turn their heads and refuse to listen to the information we have to share. I hope you'll listen and I hope that something in this website will help you make your budgie's (or future budgie's) life a little better. Like any animal, they'll reward you by being awesome, silly, playful, adorable companions.
